The NRM Chairperson for Mpigi District, Sulayiman Kaweesi, has urged residents to vote wisely in the upcoming LC1 chairperson and women’s committee elections, warning that poor leadership at village level could fuel the growing problem of land grabbing.
With only a few days left before Ugandans head to the polls, concerns over the tense political atmosphere surrounding the elections continue to grow, with leaders in Mpigi warning that the outcome could either strengthen community peace or trigger fresh conflicts.
Kaweesi said some candidates have allegedly been sponsored by land grabbers, money lenders and other influential individuals seeking to use village offices to advance personal interests.
Speaking during a mobilisation meeting in Kituntu Sub-county alongside Mawokota South MP Suzan Nakawuki, Kaweesi urged voters not to be influenced by money or intimidation.
“We have only a few days left, but I am worried that some people may vote for the wrong candidates. We are hearing that some contestants are being sponsored by land grabbers and money lenders who have caused problems in our communities. They are spending huge sums of money to buy votes. I appeal to our people not to be tempted by money at the expense of their land and property,” Kaweesi said.
He urged residents to prioritise integrity and character when choosing village leaders rather than focusing on wealth or political influence.
“Vote for someone you know well, someone with good character and the ability to protect your community. Don’t be influenced by whether they are rich or poor. We need leaders who will safeguard peace and defend the interests of the people,” he added.
Mawokota South MP Suzan Nakawuki echoed the concerns, saying Mpigi’s rapid development has attracted wealthy investors, some of whom are allegedly using dishonest means to acquire land from vulnerable residents.
“Mpigi is developing very fast. Every month, more people are moving here from Kampala looking for land. Some come with a lot of money and target vulnerable residents, forcing them to lose their land and homes,” Nakawuki said.
She said electing trustworthy LC1 chairpersons would provide the first line of defence against land grabbing, as village leaders play a key role in handling land disputes and protecting residents’ interests.
“Land disputes in Mpigi have become common. You can find several people claiming ownership of the same piece of land. Village chairpersons may appear to hold small offices, but they play a critical role in protecting communities. Elect leaders who will defend your rights, not those who will sell you out,” she said.
The two leaders also appealed to voters to reject intimidation and violence during the elections, urging them to choose leaders who will promote peace, justice and community development.
Uganda is set to hold LC1 chairperson, village committee and LC2 elections on July 28, with campaigns ongoing across the country following the conclusion of nominations.
